Blogging Respect – The Do Unto Others Principle

respect-album

Your mom always told you, Do Unto Others…and nothing could be truer in the blogging world.

How many of you really think about what you write before you write it?  And as you write it?  And after you write it, before you post it?  A blog is a reflection of not only your personality, but your personal character.  You become transparent to the world through your writing whether you mean to or not.

This goes for commenting too.

Blogging isn’t necessarily about who has the best thesis.  Or who knows what a thesis is.  Blogging is about finding your niche, your voice and putting your words and/or pictures to paper. If that wins you an award or two in the process, then consider that icing on the cake.  We all have a style, we all have a purpose.  We all want different things from blogging.   Remember that first comment?  That was better than winning an Oscar.

If you blog to reach people and connect, and people respond, that is awesome.  Any comment or post directed to you that would suggest that you are less than worthy of the respect that any regular human would get in a face to face conversation should be thrown out with the bathwater.

I’m tired of reading comments that criticize others or posts that blast certain blogs.  I’m not talking the “Dooce makes more money that I could, what’s up with that?”  I ‘m talking the disrespectful, nasty, mean spirited, cutting to the core of a person’s being.  Attacking their mothering, their intelligence, their genuineness.

People, you don’t know them, you don’t walk in their shoes, and you have no right to be so judgmental.  If you don’t like what you see, move on.  Someone likes it enough to read it and enjoy it.  Let them.  Maybe learn a thing or two about what makes people connect.  Disagree respectfully and you will earn all the respect the blogging world had to offer.

Avoid the urge to come across as a sore loser or a ‘prima donna know it all’  because you may look as pathetic as you sound.

We all have a style of writing, vlogging, twittering, facebooking.  If you are finding your voice and you are finding your niche, or if you like doing what you are doing consider youself a damn good blogger.

I comment the same way I email –
    1. write it
    2. check it
    3. read it out loud
    4. make changes if it is at anyway construed as negative
    5. send or cancel…

I don’t comment (usually) if I think it may be hurtful.

and if someone left something negative on you…who was it? I’ll go kick their arse.

    I’m with you Linda.
I have NEVER understood why people leave nasty comments. It’s just close-minded and immature. (And just plain mean.) If you don’t like what’s being said, just don’t go back. So easy.

  12. Wow, I’ve never seen any of those nasty comments. If someone posts a negative comment on my blog I just delete it. I try to remain positive and say nice things when I comment. It’s too bad that others are disrespectful.

  14. Very well said….I just don’t understand in my simple of simple minds, why a person would want to intentionally say a negative comment about someone’s blog. As you so eloquently put it, writing a blog certainly does put you out there on a limb…and has certain risks such as negative comments….but hopefully the majority of comments are ones that are sincere and positive.
