The party with Chef Scott was fabulous.  You know him from Hell’s Kitchen….he’s the cute one.. ;)   The overall vibe of the party was simple, fun, informative, and with food and beverage (HOLLA !).  Held at the Viking kitchens it had us all drooling over the fancy appliances.

Here are some of the fun photos from the event..

Video Interview: Grey’s Chandra Wilson and Downy support Quilts for Kids

dr. miranda bailey Video Interview: Greys Chandra Wilson and Downy support Quilts for Kids

Calling All Grey’s Anatomy Fans of Dr. Bailey!!! I had the opportunity to interview Chandra Wilson who plays the fabulous Dr. Miranda Bailey about her partnership with Downy. And as a Grey’s fan, I could hardly contain myself!

I love to highlight celebrities that really do good work outside their TV roles.

downy 300x163 Video Interview: Greys Chandra Wilson and Downy support Quilts for Kids

“The program is a partnership between the Downy and Quilts for Kids, Inc. Through this program, beautifully-crafted quilts are delivered to hospitalized children in Children’s Miracle Network hospitals across the country. Each year, children account for more than 6 million hospital stays in the US. These quilts help bring a smile and comfort to the faces of these children.”

But let’s hear it in her own words!

I hope you will consider getting involved, even if is to share with your friends and readers on your own blogs, facebook or twitter. Let’s all do something meaningful and spread the word!

Start by visiting www.Downy.com to engage in the program and witness the impact of bringing a smile to a hospitalized child’s face. On the site, visitors will find the new documentary, “The Gift of Comfort,” which stars Chandra Wilson and several affected children. The site also hosts new interactive features that give consumers an inside look at Downy Touch of Comfort and allows them to add a “touch of comfort” in their own ways:
• Order a quilt kit to create a quilt and send to Quilts for Kids for distribution to a child in need
• Find information about how to make a direct donation to Quilts for Kids, Inc.
• Find out how to contact your local Quilts for Kids, Inc. chapter to get directly involved

I’d love to hear if you decide to participate or spread the word!

I Don’t Want To Miss

What your kids not want to miss out on if they were home sick with the flu?
Fun times with friends…
School dances….
Sporting events….

It always happens and kids and parents alike are disappointed.

This year, for the second year now, Clorox is holding a contest for school musical groups, like glee clubs, show choirs, etc. to develop a video performance of a song written by Berklee College of Music student Will Wells on what they don’t want to miss out on if they were home sick and why prevention is important. The winning school will win a music class led by former American Idol finalist Danny Gokey!

I KNOW! I want to be in school again *clears throat and hits high “C” *

For each entry submitted, The Clorox Company will donate $100 (up to $10,000) to the Sophia’s Heart Foundation, a charity founded by Gokey in honor of his late wife, Sophia, and dedicated to helping children achieve academic success through music.

Here is the link so your kids can enter the contest.
Visit the Clorox page on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/Clorox)  to learn more about thechallenge. AND for the first 100 groups to submit, the teacher will receive a wellness care package from The Clorox Company.

I love hearing about companies doing good.  But the project has to be about something that speaks to me…

Pepsi Refresh Logo Pepsi Gives Back with the Pepsi Refresh Project

Pepsi is doing just that…their new initiative the Pepsi Refresh Project is giving out $20 Million to projects both big and small to help make communities better…like new playgrounds, speed bumps…things that matter to YOU because they affect your every day life and the lives of your neighbors and family.

Good stuff huh?

Each month you can submit your idea for a project.  Something in the categories of health, arts & culture, food & shelter, the planet, neighborhood, or education, and Pepsi will choose the top submissions and then we can vote for the winner.  We are talking grants from $5,000 to $250,000 – that’s a lot of speedbumps!  But you can see it’s a chance for you to make a difference by either submitting your own idea or voting on the finalists at RefreshEverything.com.

Dove and the “Thank You for Making a Difference” Campaign

Having teenagers, two girls and a boy, I have lived through their struggles with self esteem.  Kids can be so cruel, and mine have been at the receiving end of some pretty nasty stuff.  I’m thankful for brands that take the time to help kids out.  We’ve seen everything from teasing about weight, noses, and even some horrible sexual harassment.   It’s a wonder my kids made it through the middle school and high school years.  Well actually, I still have one to go.
fund logo

And that’s why I’m here talking about Dove products and their newest campaign.

The Dove mission is to reach 5 million girls with self esteem programming by 2010. Since 2005, the brand has reached over 3.5 million girls globally. In fact, every time you buy Dove beauty care products your purchase supports the Dove Self Esteem Fund. This fall Dove launched the “Thank you for Making a Difference” program to thank supporters for building girl’s self esteem and to invite everyone to share their stories about making a difference in self esteem.

Now you can support the Dove Self-Esteem Fund simply by entering your Dove UPC here (Dove Self Esteem Fund) and selecting a charity. For every UPC code entered, Dove will donate $1* to inspiring self-esteem programs at a charity partner of your choice. Select one: Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Girls Inc.

Buying their products can make a difference in a girl’s life.  Why not check it out today!

Why Brands Should Reach Out to the Boomer Mom

I’m on the early end of the boomer spectrum at 48, but I’m still in the club. When we talk about Mom Bloggers, I think the perception is that we are all changing diapers, sitting in carpool lines, and organizing play dates.

Not so. My kids won’t let me near the bathroom when they are in it, they all drive now, and I’m lucky if I hear about their dates 10 minutes before they leave.

But we are moms…and we are women. And we have been there and done that. We are doing things differently and doing different things. Marketers need to realize that we aren’t in the “young mommy” stages of life. For many of us we are embarking on a new frontier…preparing for or entering the empty nest syndrome.

Sales PricesYes, this has been going on and marketers are surveying demographics all the time.  But we are dealing with a bad economy. At this point we are beginning to pay for college tuitions, assessing retirement needs, and embarking on real estate transitions as we prepare to downsize. As graduating children find it harder to find jobs, we continue to parent and providing assistance at times. And as our parents age, we may find ourselves in the role of caregiver for them too.

We are still making the bulk of the household purchasing decisions. We remember the first black and white TV commercials for products that are today all over twitter, facebook, and websites with fancy flash ads. We are “puppy dog” loyal to the brands we like. (I wonder if that somehow justifies the term often used “set in your ways”).  Providing value to the market helps retain the attention of the boomer mom and helps the boomer mom save more money to be used later down the road….when those retirement dollars start rolling out.Hammer Aiming For Piggy Bank

This market grows more web savvy and the digital age moves into more areas of their lives. If you can grab the attention of a boomer age mom, get her to like your product, you have a fan for life. We only become more brand comfortable as time goes on. We still appreciate quality because we remember the way shoes, clothing, cars, and gadgets used to be made. Sturdy, tough, and reliable.  When we do begin spending that retirement money or costs decrease as kids move on, companies can be proactive by reaching out to that segment with more than a “this soup has more fiber” ad and use social media tools in a way that will get their attention.

Because of our situations, we are more aware of value and cost than we may have been in the past. I can tell you that paying for 2 and soon 3 college tuitions has me frazzled. I start to look at retirement as “what I have left to make it” and hope it’s enough.  As many of us made the mad rush to Facebook (even though we are the less frequent users), we are learning the ropes of social media as traditional media disappoints.

So how do you market to the boomer crowd? As we approach and realize the empty nest days, we are looking for change in our own lives and interested in embarking on new projects and finding new destinations. We are more mobile – may want to travel or find new hobbies. Companies can take advantage of this both online and offline. Many companies get this already. I look at  Coldwater Creek and their extensive line of easy care travel knits.   They continue to expand and update (keeping fresh and trendy) the look of this line and it resonates with my demographic.

Maybe it requires thinking outside the brand.  So many have taken on women’s health issues – breast cancer, colon cancer, heart disease which is fabulous.  But so much more can be done to grab this segment of the market.  Focus on the fun side of life for boomers.  It’s not just the health care and financial planning fields that are jumping on the boomer bandwagon.  Look at companies like LL Bean who holds fly fishing courses for women (for all ages) at their Outdoor Discovery School location in Freeport, Maine.  This is something that is on my short list to try as I dream of free time and checking this out eventually leads me to the LL Bean site retail site.

I’m ready for the next stage.  Almost too ready sometimes.  My hope is that more companies realize that moving on is an opportunity for us and an opportunity for them to be creative, engaging and inevitably successful!
